We happened upon the River House Country Inn by chance, and we are so glad we did! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The hostess, Gayle, is certainly the heart of this place and her warm, welcoming manner is what makes a bed and breakfast an experience to remember. Our first night, Thursday, we enjoyed a perfectly made dinner by the chef and enjoyed the smaller, more intimate crowd, complete with some beautiful piano playing by another dinner guest who is a local author. Breakfast all three days was sublime. We particularly enjoyed the omelets, fresh squeezed orange juice, and grilled English muffins topped with delicious homemade strawberry jam. We also had dinner here on Friday night and it was wonderful as well. They leave coffee by your door in the mornings before you come down for breakfast which is a nice touch. We stayed in the Carriage House, which is spacious and comfortable. I enjoyed the large classic book selection in the room, and my husband enjoyed Gayle's large cookbook collection upstairs in the main house. The New River is peaceful and we enjoyed sitting by the river and listening to the little waterfall near the gazebo. We enjoyed a day of hiking from Grayson Highlands (30 minute drive) to Mt Rogers, the highest peak in Virginia (9 Mike hike round trip). We also were pleasantly surprised at how much there was to do in West Jefferson, from shops and art galleriesto a perfect lunch at Sweet and Savory. This place embodies what a great bed and breakfast is about - It is full of history and charm. We will certainly be back!

Excellent staff/food/service. Beautiful mountains to hike in. Amazing river to kayak on. The rooms were one of a kind 1870's farm buildings with luxurious furnishing. Will be back often.
Stayed in the main house. Serenaded by the grand piano going to sleep and waking up, played by a very accomplished pianist (and published author). Lovely setting. Wonderful food. Owner and staff gracious and welcoming. Secluded on the New River. Only complaint in our room was very small shower.
Located on a rise just across the road from the New River, this is truly a magical place. There are a number of unique rooms in the main house's outbuildings, several with oversized Jacuzzi tubs surrounded with oil candles. Instead of a check- in, we were greeted with a glass of wine. Although it wasn't one of the regular nights this establishment turns into a high end restaurant, the proprietor offered to "throw something together" for us. The result? The most delicious salmon we had ever had and desserts that were delectable. Dinner the second night was equally delicious. Coffee was left outside our door each morning, and breakfast was delightful. We so enjoyed our conversations with other guests and with our host - and the overall atmosphere fostered by the host - that we decided to stay a second night.
